Historical Recreations of African Weapons

Recommended Books

There are many books written in multiple languages as well as several accounts and journals from which you can extract information on African culture and weapons. Some of these journals can be found in libraries and online book stores. And of course, I could not list them all. These listed below are just a few written in the English language worth looking up to begin your exploration into the history of African weapons and culture.

Peter Schmidt. The Culture and Technology of African Iron Production

The culture & Technology of African Iron Production

This is an excellent book edited by Peter Schmidt that takes a look at
African iron technology as a true science. It shows the reader that despite
the ritualistic practices that surround African iron production, it is no less
a well developed science in Africa than in Europe or Asia.

John Thornton. Warfare in Atlantic Africa 1500-1800.

Warfare in Atlantic Africa 1500-1800

An excellent must have tool full of information for becoming more familiar
with African warfare tactics. Written by John Thornton.

Christopher Spring. African Arms and Armour

African Arms and Armour

Written by Christopher Spring. Although, this book is very brief and general
and you will find many incorrect arguments, it still has its benefits at times.
And for this, it is recommended.

John Thornton. Africans and Africa in the Making of the Atlantic World, 1400-1800

Africa and Africans in the Making of the Atlantic World, 1400-1800

This book has plenty of information that gives insight into political, social and
cultural aspects in West and Central African societies and shows how heavily
these aspects help to shape African warfare. Written by John Thornton.
